If you’ve read much of my blog then you know that Senator John Cornyn is an enigma to me. His blatant disregard for logic, for his constituents, and for truthfulness is incomprehensible.
First, the Senator doesn’t work for Texans. He works for the Republican party. He is most often quoted not as the Senator from Texas, but as the Chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee. Don’t be impressed. It’s a hack job previously held by Senator Ensign from Arizona, a man who should have been run out of office on ethics and morality issues. The most important qualification for Senator Cornyn’s job is a willingness to disregard logic and one’s constituents. On to my point….
Senator Cornyn has joined with his Republican colleagues in blocking the extension of unemployment benefits to thousands of Texans and unemployed Americans. Their logic is that unemployment benefits creates more unemployment because those receiving benefits are not motivated to work. Senator Cornyn’s colleague, Senator Orin Hatch of Utah, has even called for drug testing of everyone receiving unemployment benefits. If you can’t read through the lines let me help you. The obvious sentiment is that the only reason people are unemployed is that they are lazy drug addicts. Yes I know, you still love the Senators because they’re good Christian men who support guns and don’t support a woman’s right to choose. You’re wrong on both counts. They’re just politicians who will tell you anything to get your vote and do nothing for you after they’re elected.
Well Senator Cornyn isn’t going to say what he really believes, so he has released a statement explaining that extending jobless benefits will increase the budget deficit. True enough Senator Cornyn, but your salary also increases the budget deficit along with the war in Afghanistan, aid to Israel, enforcing your proposed laws against murderabilia and the war on cell phones. Senator Cornyn repeatedly voted to support President Bush’s budget busting wars and tax breaks for the rich and big corporations. Of course, he will tell you that tax breaks for the rich actually reduce the deficit and create jobs. For example, Senator Cornyn supported President Bush’s reduction in the estate tax. Recently one the wealthiest men in the United States, a Texan, died with an estate worth billions that passed to his heirs tax free. Thank you Senator Cornyn for doing your part to reduce the deficit.
The best way to reduce our strategic and economic risks associated with our debt is to stop spending the money that we don’t have, stop. Every family, every business in America when they run out of money, they don’t just continue to try to max out their credit card. The problem is the credit card of the federal government knows no limits. Full text is here.
So on with the Senator’s program of deficit reduction. A few days after bashing the extension of unemployment benefits, Senator Cornyn introduced legislation to give tax breaks to business. In the meantime, hard working men and women across Texas are jobless and without the safety net they deserve.
