My adult children, for the first time in their adult lives, will become eligible for some form of health care under the new health care reform legislation. The big caveat is whether the bill passed in the House will make it into law. The media has played up the passage as if the legislation is law. It is not, and there are those whose political and self-interest want health care reform to fail.
Big Bad John and his cornies are working very hard behind the scenes to make sure the health care reform fails before it becomes law. At this point it’s becoming personal. I can see the benefits to my family in numerous ways. Not only because my not-so-successful adult children have a shot at health insurance, but because my one child living at home will have his coverage under my policy extended to age 26. Without health care reform he most likely would have a lapse in his health insurance because of preexisting conditions that would disqualify him otherwise. With the passage of health care reform, his coverage should continue uninterrupted.
There are those who are fortunate enough that there is little possibility that they will ever be without health insurance. Unfortunately, there are more of us who face that possibility everyday. Even among those fortunate ones, there is probably a family member, friend, or employee who is positively impacted by the passage of healthcare reform.
Health care reform is a good thing and money well spent. Certainly it’s a much better way to spend our national debt than wars in the Middle East and tax breaks for the super rich. Senator Cornyn and the Republicans are wrong to take away the most important piece of legislation passed in decades.
