Remember the mantra during the Bush administration, “All we want is an up or down vote.” The shoe is on the other foot now, and hundreds of positions in the Obama administration go unfilled as Republicans in the U.S. Senate use every tactic to delay or block appointments.
After a year, there is still no head of the Transportation Security Administration, no head of the Office of Legal Counsel, no deputies in the Attorney Generals Office, and no new Democratic member to the National Labor Relations Board. Many other critical jobs go begging while qualified nominees wait and senators such as John McCain R-Ariz, John Cornyn R-Texas and Jim DeMint R-S.C. hold up approval by requesting new hearings, threatening filibusters and other vote-delaying maneuvers. Another senator, Richard Shelby R-Ala., has gone so far as to place a blanket hold on more than 70 nominees.
